Ambassador Peter Maurer elected as president the Budget Committee of the UN General Assembly

Bern, 10.06.2009 - On 10 June 2009, Ambassador Peter Maurer, head of the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York, was elected as president of the 5th. Committee of the 64th UN General Assembly. This is the first time that Switzerland has presided over one of the main committees of the United Nations General Assembly.

Ambassador Maurer’s term in office lasts one year and begins on 15 September 2009 when the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly convenes. The 5th Committee deals with the UN’s budgetary and management matters. During the 64th session, among other things, the Committee will negotiate the budget for the 2010-2011 period and the new assessment scale for member States’ obligatory contributions to the UN regular budget. To the press in New York, Ambassador Maurer acknowledged his appointment as both a great personal honour and an honour for Switzerland.
