Switzerland co-chairs OECD Science and Technology Policy Ministerial Meeting

Bern, 25.04.2024 - Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, attended the OECD Science and Technology Policy Ministerial Meeting in Paris on 23-24 April. In her prominent role as Vice-Chair, she was able to represent Swiss interests at the highest international level, particularly with regards to ‘Open Science’ and the ‘role of skills’.

The focus of this meeting was on ‘shared challenges, transformative actions'. Discussions mainly centred on international cooperation in science and innovation in times of geopolitical tensions, the proactive stewardship of new technologies and Open Science as a means of addressing global challenges. At the closing plenary session, the ministers adopted the Ministerial Declaration ‘Transformative Science, Technology and Innovation Policies for a Sustainable and Inclusive Future'. In the coming years, this declaration will most likely serve as a policymaking tool for the OECD and the countries that took part in the meeting. The previous OECD Science and Technology Policy Ministerial Meeting was held in South Korea in 2015.

On this occasion, State Secretary Hirayama also met with delegation heads from Canada, Colombia, Hungary, the United Kingdom and other countries.
