Ueli Maurer was elected President of the Swiss Confederation for 2019 on 5 December 2018. It is his second presidential year; the first was 2013.
The president fulfils special tasks during his/her year of office, including cooperation within the government and representation of Switzerland to the outside world.
Since the establishment of the Federal State in 1848, the function of the president has undergone a number of significant changes. Many traditions are actually far more recently established than you might think.
