The SDC Cooperation Office in Port-au Prince is working closely with the local authorities and partner organisations to assess what the region’s most urgent needs are and to decide on what humanitarian aid Switzerland could provide. Yesterday, the coordinator visited the worst-hit areas to witness the situation for himself and to ensure the coordination of relief efforts.

Switzerland and its partners have already launched a number of small-scale aid efforts. With help from partner organisations, three water collection systems in Grand Goâve (Ouest district) have been repaired and funding has been provided to build a new roof for two schools in the hills surrounding the capital.

The SDC/Humanitarian Aid (HH) will honour its commitment either through direct action or through cash contributions via its partner organisations. The pledged funding breaks down as follows:

The United Nations and Haiti are also set to launch a joint international appeal. The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) is currently finalising the details of its assistance for Haiti.

Unfortunately, disaster is likely to strike again. Hurricane IKE, which has been swirling over the Atlantic, is heading towards the Caribbean. Now upgraded to Category 4, it is still unclear where IKE will finally strike.
