Agreement with India on mobility and transport infrastructure
Berne, 15.10.2025 — In view of the imminent signing of a MoU on mobility systems, Switzerland and India initialled on October 15 the text of the MoU in presence of Hon’ble Minister Nitin Gadkari, Swiss Ambassador Maya Tissafi and Assistant State Secretary Martin Saladin, Vice Director and head of SECO's Promotion Activities Directorate, and a delegation of more than 20 Swiss mobility companies. The agreement, which was approved by the Federal Council on 8 October, will facilitate access for Swiss companies to major projects in the Indian transport sector.
The MoU aims to promote and strengthen cooperation in the field of sustainable infrastructure – with a particular focus on the further development of transport and mobility systems. The MoU covers several areas of cooperation in the field of sustainable mobility and transport infrastructure. Special emphasis is placed on electromobility, cableway systems, tunnelling, the circular economy and other areas of transport.
The agreement also provides for the involvement of business, research and government in both countries. This includes public-private partnerships, recognising the role of general contractors in the implementation of major infrastructure projects, and the exchange of know-how and experience. To institutionalise the arrangement, a joint working group will be set up, which will meet twice a year. It is intended to serve as a platform for deepening and evaluating cooperation.
India is a strategically important partner for Switzerland: the volume of bilateral trade in 2023 amounted to about CHF 17.7 billion. The free trade agreement signed between India and EFTA in 2024 opens up new opportunities, particularly in the areas of infrastructure and mobility. Swiss industry associations such as Swissrail, Swissmem and suisse.ing have already expressed interest in closer cooperation.
The MoU is not legally binding and does not oblige either side to make financial contributions.
