Federal Presidency

The president of the Swiss Confederation in 2026 is Guy Parmelin from the canton of Vaud. He was elected on 10 December 2025.

The president chairs the meetings of the Federal Council and may order precautionary measures in urgent situations. The role also comes with special representational duties.

The Swiss Federal Presidency has a rich and varied history. During the first difficult decades of the federal state, the office was awarded to federal councillors with particularly strong leadership skills, but in the 1890s the system of rotation was introduced.
