Il y a un an, le 11 septembre 2001, des attentats inimaginables ont frappé les Etats-Unis. Ces actes de violence ont soulevé dans le monde une vague d'émotion et d'indignation.

En ce premier jour anniversaire, le Conseil fédéral tient une nouvelle fois à exprimer, au nom du peuple suisse, sa sincère compassion aux proches des victimes. Le souvenir de cette journée effroyable suscite encore, un an après,  la tristesse et un sentiment de profonde sympathie avec les familles en deuil.

Ces actes terroristes étaient dirigés contre les Etats-Unis, mais aussi contre toutes les sociétés qui se réclament des valeurs fondamentales telles que la paix, la liberté, la tolérance et la démocratie.

Dans la lutte contre le terrorisme, les priorités communes doivent aller au respect du droit et de la justice, mais aussi à la promotion de la paix, aux politiques fortes en faveur du développement durable et à la lutte contre toutes les formes de discriminations liées au sexe, à la religion ou à l'ethnie.

Dans cet esprit, la Suisse continuera à apporter tout son soutien à la lutte contre le terrorisme et ses causes, ainsi qu'à la promotion de la sécurité et de la solidarité internationales.La Suisse, depuis hier membre à part entière des Nations Unies s'y emploiera également dans cette enceinte qui constitue le forum approprié en vue de solutions pacifiques aux conflits internationaux.

Declaration of the Federal Council on the first anniversary of the attacks on the USA on 11 September 2001

One year ago today, the United States of America was rocked by attacks that defied belief. The acts of violence on 11 September 2001 set off a wave of sympathy and indignation throughout the world.

Today, the first anniversary of the attacks, the Federal Council reiterates on behalf of the people of Switzerland its sincere sympathy to the families of the victims. One year later, the memory of this day of horror still awakens deep feelings of grief as well as of solidarity with the victims' relatives and friends.

The attacks were not only aimed at the USA but at all societies which uphold such fundamental values as peace, freedom, tolerance and democracy.

In the struggle against terrorism we have to work together to enforce the law and uphold justice, and orient our joint efforts to the promotion of peace, a clear commitment to sustainable development, and the fight against any form of discrimination on the grounds of sex, religion or origin.

In the future, Switzerland will continue to support all efforts to combat terrorism and its causes, as well as to promote international security and solidarity. A full member of the United Nations since yesterday, Switzerland will pursue its efforts also within this organisation, the appropriate forum for the peaceful solution of international conflicts.
