Expenditure trends in compulsory healthcare insurance from 1998 to 2010 – Biggest cost increase for medication and outpatient treatment

Neuchâtel, 10.07.2012 - Neuchâtel, 10.07.2012 (Obsan) - In the twelve year period from 1998 to 2010, the inflation-adjusted expenditure of the compulsory healthcare insurance rose by CHF 6.9 billion. Population growth or ageing are only responsible for a small part of this increase. Outpatient treatment in particular, as well as medication have led to higher costs. This is a finding from a multi-year study conducted by the Swiss Health Observatory (Obsan).
