Relations between Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein are particularly close and intensive. The visit of the Liechtenstein foreign minister testifies to the very friendly relations between the two countries. Maintaining and developing good relations with its neighbouring countries, in particular through fostering close cross-border relations, is one of the main objectives of Switzerland’s foreign policy strategy. 

During their talks, Mr Burkhalter and Ms Frick discussed co-operation in consular matters, including the possible implications of the re-organisation of Switzerland’s network of representations abroad and the Principality’s association with the Schengen Area at the end of 2011. Since 1919, at the request of the government of Liechtenstein, Switzerland has assumed the role of safeguarding Liechtenstein's interests and its citizens abroad.

Mr Burkhalter and Ms Frick also discussed relations with the EU. The two countries, which are linked via a vast network of agreements forming a common economic and monetary area, are closely following the developments regarding the current debt crisis in the eurozone and the economic problems affecting the EU as a whole.

On international issues, the two ministers reviewed their co-operation within multilateral forums and several other current issues including the situation in Syria.
