The Landsgemeinde has been an institution in the canton of Glarus since 1387. It is held once a year, on the first Sunday in May. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter wants to demonstrate his close attachment to direct democracy by attending this year’s popular assembly, at which the canton of Jura will be guest of honour.
At an important time for direct democracy in the canton of Glarus, Didier Burkhalter will be attending the Landsgemeinde accompanied by Austrian Vice Chancellor Michael Spindelegger. They will be holding bilateral talks on the sidelines of the event. The two politicians already met earlier this year: in keeping with tradition, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter travelled to Austria on 19 January for his first official visit abroad as new head of the FDFA.
Relations between Switzerland and Austria are excellent. Both countries work closely together in a number of areas, including consular affairs, energy policy and development cooperation, as well as within various international organizations.
